Opinion: Down-Ballot Voting

Mary Moore • September 29, 2026

Yard signs for political candidates are starting to pop up around the county as we head toward the November election. It's not a presidential election year, and some may feel it isn't worth the effort to vote for the township board or county council. But I believe these local races are among the most important on the ballot. Local officials have a direct impact on our community, and they give residents the chance to bring concerns straight to the people making decisions.

Consider a proposed development like a data center. Officials in a distant capital may see it one way, while local officials who live nearby can weigh how it affects the neighbors, the environment, and the community's quality of life. Local races determine issues that directly affect where we live.

Part of our tax dollars goes toward maintaining our immediate community, and we should care who controls those budgets. I encourage everyone to learn about the candidates on the ballot and vote for the people they believe will make the best decisions for our area, regardless of party.

Mary Moore Candidate for Liberty Township Board Member
I'm running for the Liberty Township Board because I want to better serve my community. I believe that everyone should be treated fairly and that government should support and serve *all* individuals. With local concerns that include data centers getting approved in spite of community pushback, an expanded voucher system that is leaving area school corporations with large budget shortfalls, and state government that seems to disregard the wishes of the constituents, I feel led to step up and speak out for our township. Coming from a rural background and a family of generational farmers, I understand the struggles of smaller communities, and I see this as my chance to do something to help. I'm qualified for this position because in my earlier career, I reported on local government and had insight into budgeting and how they addressed community needs. I feel I can use that knowledge to help Liberty Township leaders do what's best for the area.
