October 2025
There are a lot of responsibilities that go along with being a citizen of a country that is ruled by a democracy. Democracy demands participation and vigilance to the principles of maintaining freedom. While we are in the midst of experiencing the decades-long neglect of participation and vigilance, and all that that entails, we cannot forget those who need support, comfort, and relief from everyday abuse.
October is Domestic Violence Month in our nation. It was originally observed in 1987 and officially designated in 1989. Purple is the color used to symbolize the courage it takes to endure domestic violence and show support for survivors. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, over 10 million adults experience it annually. This past September, the HCDP collected non-perishable food and donated it to the Sheltering Wings DM shelter as a show of our support for domestic violence victims. As Democrats, we will always support education and legislation aimed at reducing such violence. You can connect people to the national hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), or text START to 88788.
