Carey Hamilton knows what it means to grow up in a working family without enough support. Raised by a single mother with no affordable child care, she became a latchkey kid — and never forgot it. That experience helped shape her life's work.
Elected to the Indiana House of Representatives in 2016 representing Indianapolis's northside District 87, Hamilton has spent her legislative career fighting for working families. She has stood against the dismantling of Indiana's child care assistance program and the closure of child care centers pushing working parents — especially mothers — out of the workforce. She has fought to expand Pre-K to all Indiana children, believing every kid deserves a strong start regardless of zip code or family income. And she has championed fully funded public schools, opposing voucher programs that divert taxpayer dollars from neighborhood schools to subsidize private tuition for Indiana's wealthiest families.
She has fought for clean air and clean water, building on a career spent fighting pollution and conserving resources before she ever reached the Statehouse. Hamilton is also founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Indiana Legislative Trails Caucus, supporting low-cost infrastructure that improves quality of life, spurs local economic development, and expands recreation opportunities across Indiana.
A graduate of Pike High School and Indiana University-Bloomington, Hamilton lives in Indianapolis with her husband Derek, co-owner of a local small business. They have two children and one sweet rescue pup.
